MAKAR SANKRANTI-A FESTIVAL IN DEVOTION TO SUN GOD!

Good Evening!

Today is an auspicious day-Makar Sankranti/Pongal/Makara Jyothi.Ayyappa Temple festival started.morning I went to have punya darshan of Lord Ayyappa.thetemple is beautifully decorated with strands of marigold flowers.the shining golden and silver papers are brought from Guruvayoor.I could attend Kalashpooja and noon pooja.after the pooja when the shrine was opened devotee's mind calls out,''Swamiye Saranamayyappa!''Lord is beautifully adorned with many floral garlands.each time when I go to temple,I surrender everything at the lotus feet of God.

Makar Sankranti is one of the most important Hindu festivals.the sun enters the zodiac sign of 'Makar'[Capricon].'Sankranti means the movement from one zodiac sign to another.It marks the equinox-the day and night are of equal duration on this day.After today,the days will be longer.It marks the end of winter and heralds the arrival of spring.It is also the harvest festival,which has been celebrated from the times of the Aryans.The Sun God is said to turn his back on winter with his seven horse chariot,marching forward.The Sun is celebrated because it is the symbol of eternal light.

Each festival leaves some message to adopt.Makar Sankranti signifies enlightment and the transition of the self from ignorance to true knowledge.It spreads goodwill,peace and prosperity.IIt is indicative of overcoming hard feelings and promoting stronger bonds of love.

Makar Sankranti is celebrated all over India.In Gujarat,the celebrations are marked by kite flying competitions.In Uttar Pradesh the Kumbha Mela is held at Prayag in Allahabad.People bathe in the Sangam[confluence of the Ganga,Jamuna and Saraswathi] at Prayag.Hordes of people throng to this mela to take a dip in the holy water which is said to cleanse people of their sins.The holy bath is believed to open the gates of heaven for ordinary mortals

according to Hindu custom.The Hindus offer water to the Sun God in gratitude for a good harvest.

The time to seek blessings from the Sun God is here.Hindus enjoy kite flying festival on Makar Sankranti.the different colours in the sky will certainly make an interesting panorama of kites that come attached with oodles of feelings.The flying of the kite may symbolically mean reaching out to God.Kite flying is indeed a gifted opportunityPongal in Tamil means 'boiling over or spill over'.The boiling over of milk in the clay pot is considered to denote future wishes for the family.the moment the rice boils over and bubbles out of the festival,the family members shout out 'Ponggalo Pongal'.

pongal is celebrated as harvest festival for three days in Chennai.Boiledrice and milk are offered to the Rain God the first day and to the Sun God the second day.on the third day,family cattle will be given a bath,adorned with colours to honour them for the hard work they put in.

In Punjab,it is celebrated as Lohri.Bonfires are lit on the eve of Sankranti into which sweets,ssugarcane and rice are thrown.

In Maharashtra and Goa,it is celebrated by everyone.it is a specialoccasion for married ladies and they have a get together called 'Haldi Kumkum'.A pooja is offered after which family members exchange a sweet made out of sesame seeds and jaggery as agesture of goodwill.

According to Hindu mythology,it is believed that by bathing with 'til'[sesame] water,performing 'til homam'.'til tarpan','tilbhakshan' and donating 'til' cleanses past sins.It is customary to eat sweetmeats made out of 'til' and 'gul'[jaggery] along with puffed rice.

Pamba Sadya was held today.Today is the famous Pamba Vilakku.

Lakhs of devotees are crowded at Sabarimala to have drshan of Makar Jyothi.It's a miracle that happens every year on this day in between 6-6.30p.m.Makar Jyothi is a celestial star which is worshipped by the pilgrims.the devotees believe that witnessing the light brings them good luck and divine blessings.Makar Jyothi marks the climax of theMakara vilakku season of Sabarimala pilgrimage lasting 41 days.All the eyes will be glued to the channels now to have the punya darshan of Makar Jyothi.

I was busy writing posts after posts in my Malayalam blog!
I was in Thrishur for my Christmas holidays with Amma and Nanda.The holidays with my dear ones add more glow and energy. The refreshing cool mornings,the stroll in the garden among flowers,the melodious songs of the birdies,the fragrance of the opening jasmine buds,the temple visits made my days !
Amma and Nanda join me in wishing all of you A HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Today when I received this beautiful photo,I thought of writing a few lines.

Let me untie the boat and row aimlessly...

Good Evening!

It was a misty morning and the sky was amazing with lovely blue shade mixed with white clouds.I don't know how long I was looking and admiring the clean and clear sky.A cool breeze was blowing gently.My heart was filled with gratitude my eyes were moist with tender thoughts.Looking at the half moon and the star studded sky I became emotional.

Thanksgiving Day is a holiday celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada is celebrated each year on the second Monday of October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday of November in theUnited States . In Canada, Thanksgiving falls on the same day asColoumbus Day the United States. Because of the longstanding traditions of the holiday, the celebration often extends to the weekend that falls closest to the day it is celebrated.

Let me take time to thank God for the simple things in my life.

Every morning,I wake up to see the vast and deep blue sea.The green hill is on one side.At night the illuminated ships paint the sea with various hues.These sights never cease to amaze me.The clear blue sky,my cute little sparrows,pigeons and crows,the colourful fragrant flowers in the garden make my days.What more can I ask for?

My God,I know each dawn ushers a new chance in life.I get to undo all the hurts and get the energy to relive my life.I have learned wellbecause some have opposed,corrected and encouraged me in time.

My heart is filled with gratitude. we forget to live our lives in the right way,enjoying the simple pleasures of life.Do we thank daily to the wonderful gifts God has bestowed upon us?Why do we become forgetful to thank for the blessings we received?

I am so grateful for my loving and wonderful Amma and family without whom this blogging would have been impossible.:)

14th November, is Children's Day!It marks the birth anniversary of legendary freedom fighter and independent India's first Prime Minister,Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.As a tribute to his love for children,Nehruji's birthday is celebrated all over India on children's day. Here is a rare photograph of Nehruji n Rajivji!he was called Chachaji by children.14th is a day to remember a leader,who in his quiet but determined way,laid thenever the Indian political leader and Prime Minister.he is always Chacha Nehru-Nehru Uncle.He started to wear a rose on his jacket after a child pinned one on it.

Today I was surprised to get a beautiful red rose from a little friend.I could feel his love and respect towards me.

November14th is all about,
Innocence,joy and laughter,
The day dedicated to the minors.
Children are the greatest gifts of God,
Born to love n trust,care n concern.
Children's day is to celebrate childhood,
Tribute is offered to all children,
They are the most wonderful creation of God.

The dirty diapers and dampened sheets,
A loving cuddle and a beautiful smile.

Childhood is the best phase of one's life,
Free of societal responsibilities,
And financial burdens.
I often feel like going back to childhood,

To be in the care of my loving parents,
Siblings and relatives of the joint family,
Growing up among many kids is real fun,
Learning to value everything in life.
Asking hundred and one 'why' questions,
Playing a number of outdoor games,
Feeling the pleasure in sailing paper boats,
In the rain water flowed in the courtyard,
The much awaited moments to attend the festivals,
The excitement in going for a circus and movie,
The birthdays and new dresses,
The delicious feast prepared by Amma,
The wonderful pookalam put for Onam,
The love for animals and birds,
The happiness in getting first rank ,
The prizes won in the competitions,
The ടീം spirit and the healthy competitions,
My childhood has left a lot of,
Rich experiences to be treasured forever!

Friends,this day reminds to each and everyone of us to renew our commitment to the welfare of children and teach them to live by their dreams and values.all overconduct competitions for children.children these days can engage in avariety of activities that help to bring out their talents.from offering a variety of hobby classes to hosting camps and workshops,schools today,are actively encourage all around development in the students.even parents are leaving no stone unturned in developing their child's creativity.we must treat a child like an individual with his own views and opinions.children today have a variety of interests and various avenues of excersing them.from television to video games to outdoor activities,they have too much to do in too little time.:)

But then entire populace of young ones that are left ignored this special day are the downtrodden street children. sad fact is that,only a section of the country's children have an opportunity to celebrate this day.let's do our share of showing kindness and causing a smile to the less fortunate!let children enjoy and live life to the fullest!childhood should not be a burden or nightmare!There are special kids with special needs.they have special schools where the children develop their social and individual skills and feels recognised.These children are physically or mentally differently abled requiring special needs.such children have emotions just like you and me.some are exceptionally talented too in music,sports and art.fFriends,let us be more sensitive and understanding of teh world of children with special needs.I used to attend their cultural programme and their talents make me humble.if you come across such children,who are not enrolled in a school,tell their parents about the special schools.let the kids cherish their childhood!:)

A Pleasant and lovely Good Morning! The festival of unity,sacrifice and love is on Today, 6th November,Monday.

Eid Mubarak!Salam Alaikum!

The day is meant for expressing heartfelt thanks to The Almighty for giving us a blessed life !The auspicious occasion is all about sacrifices.Id-ul-Azha or Eid al-Adha, are basically Arabic words, which can be translated as 'the joy of feast of sacrifice'.

Bakrid, popularly known as Id-ul-Zuha, is an important religious festival of Muslims observed once in a year to commemorate Prophet Abraham (Ibrahim) who willingly agreed to immolate his son Ishmael near Mecca, symbolically as an act of respect and obedience to gratify God ahead of God's intervention to provide him with a goat or Bakr (Urdu) to immolate as a substitute. Bakrid is observed in the month of Dhu al-Hijjah (the twelfth and last month of the Islamic calendar) by offering special prayers and exchanging gifts. Muslims in India celebrate Bakrid with great fervor based on the Islamic calendar or lunar calendar.

The festivity, extensively known as the 'feast of sacrifice' or 'Greater Eid' celebrates Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his own son to please God and also completion of Haj by the pilgrims asking God for forgiveness.

Merry making of Bakrid kicks off with a Wajib (a religious duty) and is followed by a religious Khutbah (a religious public sermon). Muslims on this special day dress themselves in their finest clothes and visit Eidgah or Mosque to offer Eid prayer for the well-being of their dear ones and peace.

On this day Muslims sacrifice a goat or bakr[Urdu]to commemorate the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim,who willingly agreed to kill his son a

t the behest of God.it is a reminder of Prophet Ibrahim's readiness to sacrifice his son for God's sake.it also marks the completion of Haj[pilgrimage to Mecca].

It happens to be approximately seventy days after the end of the month of Ramadan.
On this day,special 'Dua'is recited by thousands of Muslims for peace and prosperity.the day also coincides with the day the holy Quran was declared complete.
prayers are offered in the mosques and the sacrificial meat is then distributed after the Id prayers.special delicacies are prepared and served among family and friends on this happy occasion.

Greeting one another with warm Bakrid wishes and preparation of special traditional dishes is considered as a part of this grand celebration.

It is atime of family get togethers.
Allahu Akbar which means God is Great will eb echoed in all Musilm houses.early morning they rise up and after having bath,all of them will gather in mosques where the Imam recites prayers and gives taks on how to go on with the commandments of God and lead a holy life like Ibrahim.Muslims prepare mouth watering meals,visit the dear and near ones,cracking jokes,laughing wholeheartedly,enjoy dancing and singing.
It is atime of family get togethers.

on this occasion of celebrations,I remember,my colleague, Rasheeda, her enthusiasm,her lively spirits,the energy filled dances n her creativity,her long silky hair,the pink rose on her hair,the sweet smile n I do think about her often who is no more with us today.she had left us on one 27th,November years before.it was an untimely departure of a wonderful person from her family n friends.

People spend a lot of money on fireworks.

The sound is an indication of joy;

Will kill a lot of insects,

During Diwali,everyone gets up early,

And takes an oil bath,

After doing Lakshmi Pooja,

Special rangolis are put,

The designs n vibrant colours,

Keep the evil spirits at bay.
Diwali is the grand festival,

With religious rituals n colourful ceremonies;

It is celebrated with great gaiety n fervor,

And it symbolises unity in diversity.

Illuminated a akash kandils are hung,

At the entrance of Hindu households.

With a nip in the air,

colourful sky-lanterns embellishing the exteriors of homes,

And radiate the joyful glow of the revelling members,

Strings of dazzling bulbs are woven around trees,

Rows of flickering lamps beautify the entire houses,

Children light up fire wheels that dance on the floor,

They wave sparklers in the air!

All are gearing up for the festival.

Today at the wee hours,effigies of Narakasur will be burnt,

It is the day Lord Krishna slayed the demon,Narakasur.

It is the time for family get togethers.

Diwali is the beginning of the new financial year.

Naraka Chaturdashi marks the vanquishing,

Of the demon Narakasura by Lord Krishna n Satyabhama.

Friends,remember,DIWALI is a festival of lights,

It is not afestival of noise!:)

DIWALI symbolises the victory of goodness over evil.

Let us do Lakshmi Pooja for prosperity,material abundance n spiritual upliftment.Devi is worshipped to remove troubles ththat prevent us from starting a spiritual path or business.a special worship is offered to Devi annually on this auspicious day of Diwali.Lord Ganesh is one of the five five prime Hindu deities -Brahma,Vishnu,Shiva and Durga being the other four-whose idolatry is glorified as the Panchayatana Puja.

Tomorrow is my beloved Amma's Birthday-Uthram Star of Thulam Month.Uthram is the birth star of Lord Ayyappa.

How much I wanted to be there at home with Amma on this auspicious day!But due to Diwali holidays no tickets are available.Kunjettan[my second brother]Nanda and Madhav will be with Amma.

Today's post is my Birthday Gift to My Amma,the most wonderful,loving and influential person in my life!Amma is my source of inspiration!As the name Chandrika means,Amma spreads the moonlight of love,peace and happiness.:)you can view the photo of my Amma and Achan [Father].

Every day is a new beginning
But tomorrow is very special for us,
Amma ,it is your birthday,
Of the most wonderful person of our lives.
You are so simple n don't believe in celebrations,
But we want the day to be memorable,
So I decided to write down my feelings,
For which many posts I will need .
Born in an aristocratic family,
To the wonderful parents,
In a village near Guruvayoor,
Who had wonderful education
under the guidance Of the popular Gurus and Mahakavis!
Who opted for music as the special subject,
For the professional course in Trichur,
Who sings so melodiously,
Who has a wonderful style of writing,
And an excellent command in English n Malayalam,
Under the guidance of the scholars n poets
Being so lucky to have strong foundation,
Who won the hearts of the faculty and friends,
Just being the simple and person,
Who worked as the high school teacher,
Teaching English and Social Studies,
Winning the hearts of hundreds,
And the most lovable human being,
Married to a perfect gentleman,
Belonging to an aristocratic family,
And thus my Amma became Ms. Chandrika Balachandra Menon.
Together my parents developed,
The love for letters and reading,
The introduction to the amazing world of English,
The love for the language
The moral support n inspiration,
To participate in curricular n non curricular activities,
The dance classes,classical and folk arts,
Reading newspaper should be a routine,
Checking dictionary must be a practice,
The words are more powerful than swords,
The culture,the traditions,the devotion passed on,
The best of education and the best of life given,

The Joy Of Giving Week was celebrated from 2nd October-8th October, this year.The motive behind celebrating this week is to develop kindness among poeple and to instil the quality of giving something to the dear and near ones and to the needy without any expectations.This week was launched in 2009 and is held every year starting on a Sunday and ending on a Saturday,including 2nd October-Gandhi Jayanthi Day.Let us remember the great freedom fighter of India-the Father Of Our Nation-Mahatma Gandhiji who was the strong pillar behind the millions who changed India into a free country!I have observed and experienced that the joy of giving is manifold more than the joy of receiving.The happiness and satisfaction one receives after giving is irreplaceable as it evokes genuine human feelings.Today we are too busy to spare time to reach out our relatives,friends and the needy.

One need not be rich to be the part of this noble celebrations.Have a large heart filled with love and care.What can we give?It is not just money or materials.We can gift time,skills and resourcesThere is a long list that we can offer.

We are remembering the great soul,Bapuji,today on his birth anniversary with respect and love .Today is the birth anniversary of our Ex-Prime Minister,Shri.Lal Bahadur Shastriji too.I really wish,2nd October should not be just another holiday for us.I was influenced by the great personality right from the childhood.that is because of the good upbringing,the right awareness n the vast reading.Here is a simple attempt to remember the Father Of Our Nation.

Mohan Das Karamchand Gandhi,
Bapuji as he is affectionately called,
Born to Karamcahand Gandhi n Putalibai,
In Porbander,in Gujarat,on 2nd October,1869,
Very shy and was scared by nature;
The values of truthfulness,honesty n integrity,
Were instilled in him, right from his childhood;
Mohandas got married at the age of 13-14;
His wife was Kasturba of the same age;
As like many of us Mohandas too,
Fell into the bad company in young age,
And did the sinful deeds;
But he realised the mistakes n wrote them down;
And handing over the letter to his father,
He sat by the bed side as his father was ill;
Tears rolled down from father's cheeks;
But he did not utter a single word,
The pain was written on his face;
And the silence was the best punishment he received;

From Atham onwards,it is raining.so,this onam will be drenched n the pookalam may be spoiled.but,rain is considered to be an auspicious sign and it's a gift of nature.
here i present my Onam post before you,on this auspicious Thiruvonam morning!

HAPPY THIRUVONAM TO ALL OF YOU!

Kerala's biggest festival ONAM is being celebrated today.It is a festival of flowers,farmers,nature and communal harmony!Today is the day when one gets to display one's culinary and creative side.Onam is basically a harvest festival and thus it is not related to any religion.It is about celebrating harvest in the best manner.

Keralites were busy purchasing the provisions,vegetables,fruits n new clothes.but here there was no uthrada pachil.everything has come in packets,the banana chips,sharkara upperi varattiyathu,palada packets[ready to make],vegetables,banana leaves everything is available in the market.
''Maveli nadu vaneedun kalam..........,
Manushyarellarumonna pole''.
When King Mahabali ruled Kerala,there was equality,peace,honesty n prosperity made the state the paradise on the earth.Once again Keralites across the world eagerly wait to welcome the legendary King Mahabali on Thiruvonam Day,2nd sept,2009.
I always cherish my childhood memories specially of festival days which add colour to my life,spring to my feet and light to my mind n a smile to my lips.and these memories make me miss my village in Kerala.
I was born n brought up in a joint family of twenty to thirty members n i was having my siblings n cousins to play with.we always had fun.we lived in the ancestoral tharavadu n in pathayapura uncle n fly stayed.it was another double storeyed house in the courtyard.
onam days begin with the wandering on the hill tops,the valleys near the fences for collecting flowers.onam takes us back to nature.i love the small cute white colured Thumba[a must],yellow coloured mukutti,red coloured shoe flowres[in many other shades too],violet coloured vadamalli,the bright coloured marigold,the red colured thechipoov n so many unknown flowers.the floral carpet on the cowdung smeared courtyard welcomed the guests from Atham onwards.the size of the pookalam will be increased by adding more flowers to it on every passing day.Thumba poov is given more importance as it is the favourite flower of Lord Shiva and King M ahabali was a worshipper of Lord Shiva.
After having an early bath,we wore the Onam Kodi[new dress]that were gifted by the eldest member of the family and put the beautiful pookalam.we used to wait for the Onam Kodi anxiously.the breakfast consists of steamed banana pieces[hot],fried papads n banana chips.wow!what mouthwatering wholesome breakfast.then we used to go to Guruvayoor Temple to have the punya darshan of Ambadi Kannan.on Uthradam devotees offer the bananas to Kannan.this is a famous offering.at both the nadas huge colourful pookalam will be put for ten days by the shopkeepers n different organisations.
in our tharavadu,the tenants used to bring bananas,vegetables n other crops cultivated in the fields and they were given Onam gifts.they used to address us as thampuran n thampuratti.kuttipennu still adress amma,''thampuratti''with respect.
Once we reach home,a sumptuous onam sadya awaits us with eleven to thirteen dishes.we sit on the mat laid on the floor.the sadya is served on tender banana leaves.a strict order of serving dishes one after another is obeyed.first the sadya is served for Lord Ganapathi infront of a lighted lamp as we start everything in the name of God.boiled bananas,fried chips,sweet banana chips,papad,parippu kari, puliyinchi,lime pickel,kalan,oalan,aviyal,sambar,pachadi,kootu kari,cabbage thoran,payasam n prathaman are the the items commonly prepared.whole family members start the preparations on teh previous night.the onam sadya is a joint effort.i love having hot boiled rice,ghee and parippukari.the colourful arrangement on the lush green banana leaves look even more tempting and irresistable.:)
After the grand meal,its time for people to indulge in recreational activities and enjoy the festival.men will be busy in rigorous sports like tug of war while ladies perform Kaikottikali n Thumbi Thullal.ladies wear the most beautiful traditional gold bordered mundu and neriyathu.gents wear gold bordered mundu and veshti.girls look beautiful in pattu pavada n blouse.besides,there is also a tradition of playing on a decorated swing hung from a high branch of a tree.onam songs are sung on the occasion.i miss the swing and the hands that used to swing me too.:) nanda n friends perform kaikottikali for the colony celebrationsand I was so happy they could perform the same before Lord Guruvayoorappan.
doing poojas to thrikkakarappan and having the neivedyam,ada after the pooja bring out the rituals behind the festival.
Onam is the only festival in Kerala that lasts for ten days.this is the festival that all keralites celebrate in high spirits.the proverb ,''Kaanam vittum onam unnanam''is really true.Onam reflects the faith of the people,a belief in the legendary past,religion n power of worship. from Chingam first onwards the preparation begins in the houses.
Friends,for the next onam,try to be in God's Own Country,the land of coconut trees,back water,house boats,ayurvedic get aways,thundering beats of drum,delightful festivals,enchanting nature,historical temples,snake boat races,traditional mohiniyattam,kaikottikali and finally the lip smacking home made food!

I miss onam in my house in Kerala with Amma n my family members.tomorrow i've invited my north indian friend n fly for Onam sadya as they really enjoy our feast. the spirit was always high and the hopes were bright n colourful.

Dear Friends,
It is raining heavily and the weather is too cold.tomorrow,5th september is TEACHER'S DAY,the birth anniversary of one of the notable teachers n philosophers,the late Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan[sept5th1888-april17th,1975] who was India's second President.he was born in a poor family in Tirutani,Madras.After Dr.S.Radhakrishnan ebcame the president of India in 1962,his students requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday,September5th,to which Dr.Radhakrishnan replied,''Instead of celebrating my birthday separately,it would be my proud privilege if September 5th is observed as Teacher's Day.''we take pride in the thoughts of teachings of the Guru of Gurus,someone who possessed the qualities of a rishi and a Raja and thus was considered a Rajarshi.He was a famous teacher and his birthday is celebrated as Teacher's Day in aIndia.after serving two times as vice president,Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was elected as President of India in 1962.He followed the philosophy of Swami Vivekanandan n Rabindra Nath Tagore.He was awarded Bharat ratna in 1954.Dr.S.Radhakrishnan is one of the great persons who is always remembered fondly;from humble beginnings to the greater heights.[i persons who is always remembered fondly;from humble beginnings to the greater heights.[I love reading the life histories of great personalities].

I respect n bow my head with gratitude at the feet of my parents n gurus.we have two sets of teachers in our life;our parents and the teachers who formally teach us.during summer vacation,Amma the respectable teacher ,used to teach us the grammar lessons for the forthcoming year.as English n Social Studies Teacher,Amma could create interest n curiosity in our minds to learn more n to explore the vast field of knowledge.i still recollect the respect n fame amma had in our village.such a soft,sweet,humble n elegant person who is full of knowledge.reading habit was inculcated at an early age and we five children were gifted with reading materials.Amma n Achan had wonderful collections of good books in english.even now amma reminds us to read the editorials of the newspapers which i just don't like.:)the regular training,the systematic ways of studying n the right guidance helped me to be the topper in Social Studies in tenth board exam.i was so thrilled.:)our young brother,Madhav stood first in the whole panchayat,scoring cent percent in maths an became the pride of us n the whole village.my parents always encouraged in participating in various competitions like,elocution,recitatin,dance,essay writing n story writing.the exposure gave all round development.whatever i'm today is due to the training n blessings of my parents n gurus.my Amma is my role model as the ideal teacher.:) if we have won the numerous certificates,trophies n medals ,the credit goes to the great inspiratin offered by our loving parents.the atmosphere was so creative.

Nanda wanted to become a college lecturer,but later in life she had to accept another prestigious job in another field in the middle east.still she is so amazing in finding solutions to the problems n teaching the practical lessons of life softly n lovingly.I miss you nanda.

Let's celebrate Teacher's Day,

In high spirits n cheer n enthusiasm,

who teach us many things.

Chubby and smiling elephant headed Ganesh is the eldest son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi.He is invoked before any auspicious beginnings.Ganesh Chaturthi is also referred as Chavath.His four hands hold a conch,a discus,a bowl of sweets and a water lilly.Ganesha is pot-bellied and is always attended to by his vehicle -the Rat.Worshipping caly idols of Lord Ganesha is an ancient custom.I have many small and cute Ganesha idols received as gifts.
Ganesh Chaturthi is the only festival where Mother and Son are welcomed,consecreted and worshipped together.Parvati,mother of Lord Ganesha is worshipped on the prevuious day as Haritalika!This pooja is celebrated with great joy in all the communities with each community featuring distinct customs.This ia known as Gouri Pooja.
Parvati,the daughter of Mount Himalayas did penance to marry Lord Shankar.So,on this day,married women pray for the well being of their husbands by worshipping the Goddess.Strict fast with only intake of fruits and coconut water is carried out for the prsperity of the husband.
The idol of the Goddess,made up of clay is brought and set on a wooden paat.Haritalika Aaratis are sung with great pride and faith.The naivedya includes varan bhat and sweet kheer made up of rice and ghee.

Lord Ganesha has written the epic,Mahabharata,dictated by the sage Vyasa.So,Ganesh is always considered of the God of Learning,Wisdom,prosperity and Success.
Ganesh Chaturthi Festival is celebrated from the fourth day [Chaturthi] of the month of Bhadrapad of the
Hindu Calendar.
This year,the day of Chaturthi coincides with the completion of Ramzan.The Muslims break their fast after sighting the moon,while the Hindus do not lay sight on the moon on the day ofChaturthi.Devotees carried idols of Lord Ganesha yesterday for installation.
Chavath follows the rainy season.During this time,the state is in lush green and abounds in natural wealth like fruits and vegetables.Even in the wild,one finds different kinds of fruits wrapped by striking colours and plants in full bloom.Such properties that appear everywhere before the festival are seen hanging to the Matoli infront of the idol.Matoliis the main decoration at the chouth.A frame of bamboo or beetle nut palm is hung in front of the Ganesh.Each square in the frame is 8 to 12 inches with 16 to 24 squares.Bunch of wild fruits and cultivated crops are hung on the Matolli.The tradition is strictly adhered that athread from the Kevni plant only has to eb used to tie the frame to the roof,bunches of mango leaves and fruits.Variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables like cucumbers,white gourds,chibud,pumpkins,tangerines,bread fruitetc.and bunches

of local fruits like ambade,coconuts,Shiptem[raw beetle nut bunches],half-ripe banana are used traditionally.Besides this,specially brought wild fruits like Kanglam,Phaglam,Mattam are also used.All of them are arranged beautifully according to their sizes and colours.The fruits used for the Matolli are to be plucked carefully and should not touch the ground.
The festivals are a time for family reunions,community celebrations and functions.It is also a time for large gatherings and movements of people.Festivals bring together those who are far and near.Devotees enjoy bursing fireworks.All are enthusiastic.The Matolis are ready,the crackers have been bought andladoos,neoreos and modaks are all set to be gorged on over this week.Ganesh Chaturthi arrives after Shravan's month long diktat of abstience.

Hindus go to their ancestoral homes to participate in the rituals and celebrations.This reminds me of Onam celebrations when Keralites across the globe reach their dear ones.ദി to hyper mode in its celebrations,but with specific festivitiesin villages and ancestoral houses which may last between one and half day to seven,eleven and twenty one days.Now a days it is celebrate dfor one and half day due to work commitments.The villagers during the afternoon and night religious ceremonies vis

it each others' houses and join in singing the aartis of the tunes of the local drum called the Ghumat,an earthen pot covered.
Emersion of the idols is amagnificient event and every villager,young and ols join into sing,Ganapati Bapa Moraya,Pudiya Varsha Lavakar Ya meaning-Oh,Lord Ganesha,please come early next year.
Lord Ganesh loves modak, a jaggery and grated coconut paste in adeep fried crispy patti pouch.A visitor to any Goan Hindu home shall find delicatessen such as neureos,spicy shev,chivda and many such mouth watering delicacies.Twentyone modaks are steamed and served to God with neoroes,ladoos and fruits.The food is considered to be lord's favourite.
Devotees are running around picking up items from their lists.Everything from decorating the home to gifts for loved one.This not only marks an auspicious time on the Hindu Calendar,but the beginning of the business boom.
Ganesh Chaturthi signifies the inter relation of mankind and nature.The entire celebration worships nature with a strong belief that the very existence and sustainance of all creatures in the universe rely on nature.The same is reflected in the formal prayer-Prithivi say shalini-abundance's in natural wealth also reflected in the folk lore;oral traditions.
Crackers and Bhajana are the trademark of the huge processions that wind their way to waterbodies to immerse Lord Ganesha's statue.With a request to return next year devotees return homes to the chores of their regular lives.

EID MUBAARAK!

It's festival mood everywhere.Eid is celebrated today /tomorrow and Ganesh Chaturthi,day after tomorrow , onThursday! .The celebrations for both the festivals have already started since daysMail box is getting filled with greetings.:)Last year too I had written a post on this wonderful festival.I join my dear friends who celebrate this beautiful festival of Eid-ul-Fitr and so thought of writing another post today.

Eid -ul -Fitr is a joyous occasion.My Muslim friends are in high spirits.It celebrates kindness and discipline and strives to establish peace in this confused life.105 millions of Muslims make India the second most populace Islamic Nation in the world.Eid is derived from the word,'oud' or 'the return' to signify the return of Eid each year.'Fitr'' means a donation.It is given away to the poor and the needy during Ramzan.Fitr is a must for every Muslim and each member of the household must contribute.Fitr is distributed so that even the poor can celebrate this festival with others.So beautiful!What a kind gesture!
This festival is very i important for its religious implications.It is celebrated after the fasting month of Ramzan [the ninth month of Muslim year],on the first day of the Shavval month of the Muslim Year.It is believed that the Koran was revealed to Prophet Mohammed in the month of Ramzan.I appreciate and admire my Muslim friends;right from small children to adults,they strictly follow fasting.'Ramz'' means to burn and fasting is considered to burn down one's sins.Fasting or Roza starts at sunrise and lasts until sunrise.During this time no food not even water is consumed.[I can never think of this].The principle behind Roza is to understand the plight of the poor and pledge to live a more and significant life .

The enchanting crescent moon is seen on the 29th or 30th day of Ramzan,followed by the day everyone is waiting for -Eid.

I have many Muslim friends who are in the joyous mood and in high spirits who celeberate Eid -ul-Fitr.Eid is the end of the holy month of fasting of Ramadan.It is the festival of purification after completing fasting month.Eid-ul-Fitr salat is offered in an open places like,open grounds,squares or fields called Idgah.Public Eid prayers are held and everyone participates.It is customary to walk to the Idgah for this holy service.It is so impressive and a noble event.Multitudes raise their hands to the Heaven in a ceremony of unparalled organisation,discipline and equality.The spectacle of millions of people bowing befo God filled with symmetrical grace,majesty and a soul stirring feeling and it is so touching.The salat is performed with Jammat with extra Takbirs,three of them in the beginning of the first rakaah and three of them just before ruku in the second rakaah.The Eid prayer is followed by the sermon[khutbah]and then a supplication [dua]asking for forgiveness ,mercy and help for all living beings across the world.What a beautiful message this festival offers!
It is then customoray to embrace the persons sitting on either sides while greeting them,''EID MUBAARAK!''After prayers people visit their friends and relatives and share the happiness.
Eidi or gifts are often given;it is common to give small amount of money to the children by the adults.Children salam parents and elders.Here Muslim devotees have their namaz in the huge ground near my house.I can watch them doing the rituals standing in the balcony at the backside.The congregational method of praying,according to the Prophet is sought because the harmonious beauty of life comes only through intermingling and greeting each other by embracing and utterin,''Eid Mubaarak''.

On the eve of Eid,the entire enviorns keep awake with children shouting loudly,''Eid ka chand ho gaya hai''.

Today Muslims wake up early in the morning ,offer Salatul Fajr,getting cleaned,putting on new clothes and apply perfume.I love the smell of Athar.It is forbidden to fast on Eid.So our Muslims have dates before attending the special Eid prayer.It is a very good practice of performing charity-Zakat is given to the poor and needy.

This is also known as the smaleer Eid[perunnal] as compared to the Eid -Al- Adha that lasts four days following the Hajj and is referred to as the greater Eid.Muslims are commanded to complete their fast on the last day of Ramdaan and recite the TAKBIR all throughout the period of Eid.

Markets are livelier now.People buy new clothes and sweets.Women get attractive to bangle stalls and jewellery shops.Dry fruits,spices and fruits are purchased to prepare mouth watering dishes.Here,our Musilm neighbours used to bring delcious biriyani on this day.We used to enjoy the special biriyani and the sweet dish,Sewayya[vermicelli cooked in milk and sugar].I always enjoy the dryfruits,sweetmeats and biriyani.The meal is really grand.Now they have shifted to their new house.

GOKULASHTAMI ,A DAY TO REJOICE!

Today is one of the most important days for Hindu devotees!Lord Krishna's Birthday...Ashtami Rohini which is also known as Gokulashtami! Today is Sree Krishna Jayanti!
Ashtami Rohini is the celebration of the birthday of Lord Krishna. This is the same as Krishna Janmashtami in the north India with regional variations. Ashtami Rohini falls in the Malayalese month of Chingam (August-September) under the fourth lunar asterism or Rohini Nakshatra, on the 8th quart of the moon Ashtami. My blog template of Yeshoda Ma and Kannan is the most auspicious image that gives me a soothing and cheerful feeling.many of my friends have appreciated the template.Ambadi Kannan graces the writing skill.

When againGokulashtami celebrations are in high spirits,

When the night is dark and the sky is ക്ലൌടി

I feel lonely and long to be with you,Kannan.

I want to be Yeshoda,Devaki and Kurooramma,

I want to run after the naughty Kannan,

And to chase and reach my little Kanha,

To fondle and cuddle and pamper my little one,

To bathe him and feed him with butter,

To kiss on his butter smelling lips,

And to sing the melodious lullabies,

Vishnu took various incarnations to protect the mortal world from evil.in his eighth incarnation he was born as the son of Vasudeva and Devaki.Gokulashtami celebrates the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna,whp was born to to bring an end to the rule of his maternal uncle Kamsa.Rituals call for a fast on the day before [Saptami thithi] followed by a noght long vigil to commemorate teh birth of Krisna at midnight and his immediate removal by hi sfather Vasudeva to aoster home for safe keeping.at midnight the deity of infant Krishna is bathed,placed in a cradle and worshipped.the twenty four fast is then broken after offerning prayers and Naivedya[prasadam] to Kannan.Dahi pohe is the favourite dish and therefore still it is offered.

Kirtan performances are held in temples,bells are rung,conches are blown and the whole atmosphere is full of gaiety and happiness.a pot of clay is filled with curds and positioned at a height.people form human pyramids to reach the pot.the objective is to break the pot of curds.this symbolises achievement through unity.the youth who participte in the dahi handi are called govindas.they forget everything and get cheered by the crowd.

I'm happy to say,because of the pious atmosphere we have been brought up,we are strongly religious and Iam very proud of that and without Kanna's love and blessings our lives will be a total zero.thanks a lot my dearest parents for instilling the love and devotion in our minds towards Kannan.

most of amma's poems are based on the love for KRISHNA.we have a cute white Krishna with us,bought from Guruvayoor.We keep this smiling Kanha for Vishu Kani.Statues of Krishnas are the morning kani,in achan's house and in our house.For achan it was a must. Achan always wanted to open his eyes to the photo of LORD GURUVAYORAPPAN.Amma does the same and we follow. I remember surya,my blogger friend who has written thousands of poem on Krishnan.Hats off to you,Surya.really wonderful poems,well written.

HAPPY RAKSHA BANDHAN!!!

It is raining these days...Cool breeze is blowing...Chamapka tree is full of bright yellow flowers!The small birds are singing for me...Life with Amma in Trichur is so refreshing and soothing.Nature is at its best!

Happiness is all around.It's celebration time .One after another people are busy celebrating events and festivals and .The atmosphere calm .
Raksha Bandhan is more of cultural festival and at temples located insome places. A large number of hindu girls and boys gather to celebrate the festival.It is celebrated with different rituals,family gettogethers and sweets.Raksha bandhan is about sentiments,love and enjoyment.like any other festival it has its unique significance.Raksha means protection.Bandhan means bondage;so,Raksha Bandhan is a bondage that protects usriends today's post is dedicated to my loving brothers,who mean a lot to us- -me and nanda. las you all know, we are five children of our parents-hum paanch.the star of my blog,nanda is great.whenever I write about amma,i talk about nanda too.and here we present our beloved brothers before you.The love is the superior feeling that over rules the small fights and arguements.When we face a problem,we are sure more than us ,our siblings are worried.They keep a track of the daily happenings .They join us in our joys and sorrows,give us moral support when we feel , we are losing our courage.they offer us the shoulder to lean and cry,to hold their hands when we are about to lose balance and to face the lives with positive attitude.
Kunjettan,my second brother introduces us to the world of spiritual and serious reading and he gifts amma many such books.As you all know,nanda is the sweet favourite sissy,but they love me a lot.I still give ample opportunities for all to scold me and to remind me blogging is not life.There are other things that Iam neglecting and Kunjettan,he wants me to write in magazines not in blog.Still,iam taken care of,they get upset when iam not on chats or phone or mails.My God,thanks a lot for this wonderful relations!orelse where I would have been!and when my phone call doesn't reach kunjettan once aweek,he complains to amma.I am so happy this time,my big brother is with me on this auspicious day and I have a lovely cute Rakhi to tie on his hand!

Ettan,our eldest brother,

the most loving and caring,

he expresses his love n care,

by words and actions,

who reaches out to all,

when his presence is needed,

generous enough to shower us with gifts,

who sits and chats with my friends,

who has a very good sense of humour,

ettan and family and nanda and family,

they were never away from us,

as both of them could vist in week ends,

they got together for celebrations,

and lived happily in the beautiful city.

I was pampered a lot,

during my visit to the middle east,

I named them and they got them !

Kunjettan ,our second brother,

who believes in certain principles,

a product of REC [now NIT] calicut,

passed out M.TECH, standing first in the university,

so simple and humble,who has high thoughts,

works with satellites and missiles,

down to earth and guides me alot,

he lives a peaceful life with family,

and just because of you,brother,

kunjettan,we can never forget,

your efforts and the time spent

kunjettan does a lot of charity

And he is so kind hearted

and the youngest of us is Madhav,

all of you know him very well,

from my earlier post,Happy Doctor's Day!;

the brilliant,the favourite of our family,

the most beloved and adventurous,

who has time for kids and plays with them,

Dear Friends,
A lovely cool evening!it's raining heavily in Kerala....the nature is at its best.I was writing posts after posts in Malayalam....so my English blog took a back seat.Thanks a bunch to my beloved Amma,my close friend,my blogger Guru and my good friend from the garden city who made me write this post!I am obliged!
Kerala is always blessed with plentiful rains..
The rains always spells it magic on me amazingly...The rains,a hot cup of tea and soft muscic motivate me !Listening to music enjoying the rhythm of drizzles,let me write this post!Rains evoke different kinds of feelings in human minds!Water -logged bylanes make walking horrible!I don't have to walk outside as I am enjoying my holidays!Right from my child I could enjoy rains as I lived in a traditional Nalukettu with Nadumuttam[a small compound]inside the house!

The grey and dark shades of clouds,
The fresh and fragrant blooms in my garden,
The tinkle of wind chimes in the cool breeze,
The lush green landscapes and the puddles on the road
It's Thiruvathira Njaattu vela time of the year
When rains lash out and farmers get busy sowing seeds!
Rain brings prosperity and freshness;
It's sensual,compassionate,consoling
I love watching the rains falling down on roof tiles,
Singing,''Pitter...Patter....''putting me into sleep

When people enjoy fishing in the backwaters,
His memories fill my heart!
On the wet streets when I go for a stroll,
I feel the softness of the cool drizzles!
I miss those beautiful moments
Walking hand in hand with him,
Just listening to the rhythm of rains......
Knowing the heartbeats are faster...
Feeling so comfortable in each others company.....
The long distance we used to walk.....
When silence becomes stronger than sound!
A bright smile adorns our faces...
The presence of someone special is so soothing
The emotional and moral support we get...
The grass is green under our feet
The gulmohar flowers look so beautiful...
When my the cool drizzles fall on my feet,
I just want to hold your hands
And start dancing till we get tired!
The love reflects in his eyes
Casting a magic in my heart!
Along with the cool drizzles,
Shaking a leg holding his hands
Feeling the hot breath that arouses the feelings,
The fragrance of the enchanting Champaka flowers.
I pray,let this rain never stop!

A Pleasant And Lovely Morning To One And All!
Monsoon started in Kerala in full swing!Schools have reopened after the summer holidays.I feel so nice watching the kids going to schools.They are fresh and enthusiastic.They are not bothered about heavy rains.Splashing water to both sides kids walk on wet roads.There is glow on their faces.I love these kids alot!
Rains bring memories.I feel blessed to have good friends.With some I have special bondsBut I never thought soemone would become the friend for lifetime.We come across someone whose absence is felt in full depth;for whom you look forward.
How I can connect so deeply with someone who was a total stranger to me!It's nice,I must say so nice to share a hot cup of tea when pitter-patter brings the cheer!
It's fun enjoying teh rains while the music is played.Reading a fiction listening to the raindrops gives me the best feelings!

Dear Friends,
Good Evening!
It was a beautiful and inspiring morning spent among newly bloomed flowers.After the morning prayers I was sitting at pc sipping the hot tea.Suddenly it started raining.The summer showers again...the unexpected cool drizzles..Enjoying the raindrops,I started my wonderful day.I must tell you,these raindrops fill my heart with love and fragrance of friendship.
These days I enjoy posts in Malayalam more....Thrishur,Amma,temples,flowers and elephants make me love writing in mothertongue more often.
Away from work,my life seems unhurried now.It is wonderful to soak in the luxury of greens!The feeling is so soothing to soul.Here nature smils with me or I have enough
time to see that refreshing smile.:)

A morning meal makes us full,

A morning hello would make us smile,
But a morning prayer will make our day complete.
And I never forget my daily prayers.
I feel blessed and grateful
For having a such a wonderful friend across the seas,

The soft and lovely movements of the flowers in my garden caught my attention.They were dancing in the breeze.

It's too hot and the summer is severe in Kerala.

Today is an auspicious day!The morning call to Amma to wish her,HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY on this second Sunday Of May,made me feel so happy and blessed!

After having darshan of Lord Ayyappa,Ganesha,Karuppaswamy,Navagraha,Lord Muruka,Naga Raja and Shanta Durga in the temple,I am at peace with myself!The peaceful atmosphere,the divine presence of Lord Ayyappa,the vast temple courtyard,the beautiful flowers filled my heart with happiness and cheer!

The reason behind my smiles and success!

My Parents taught me to dream higher
And taught me to reach the dreams!
After reading my profle,many of my friends had asked me about my Amma's five books that are published.Amma is a retired high school teacher and was teaching English and Social Studies in 10th std.The famous poets have taught my parents in collge and the foundation in Engish and Malayalam is very strong.Whatever we five children are in life today is due to the proper guidance,love and right direction given by our loving parents.I can not tell you how much my Amma means to me.Today I am posting one of the poems written by Amma from her second book,Smarananjali[In Remembrancededicated to my loving Achan[Father].

The Love Of A Mother

The pride of a man breaks down,

Sick and despondent when he is!

And pathetically pinned on a weary bed.

Then,ah!what a consolation he gets

When appears his loving mother beside him.

The divine soul that looked after him,

From childhood and brought him up,

Administering to his helplessness.

Vividly he sees the enduring tenderness
In the love of a Mother to her son,

A love that transcends all other
Affections of the heart!
His selfishness,the ingratitude

And all other unworthy deceitful attitudes,

Cannot chill,weaken or reduce

Her affection to her beloved son.

Ready she is to sacrifice every comfort

For the enjoyment of her son;

Every pleasure she will reject

Willingly for the sake of his happiness!

How ecstatic she is in his fame and prosperity!
When misfortune befalls him

Dearer he is to his mother!

After the mild cool summer showers,the morning is really beautiful....and sunday mornings are more beautiful......a day to relax....a day to laze around.......

The spring has added the beauty to nature.....The fresh fragrant flowers welcome me in the morning!A cuckoo sings through out the day.....My Little Star takes care.....The life is peaceful .I have to live on positive notes;make others live happily.The professional and personal life get balanced with support of dear ones.

''Heart is like a bottle of perfume.If you never open it,nobody knows the fragrance inside it...If you keep it always open soon you will lose your fragrance.So act wisely''.

We come across people who become so close to us within such a short time..It happens.....You don't have to see him/her.You don't have to even hear her...At times one can't think of anyoneelse other than just being with him....We feel the presence even in his absence..

Good Morning!

Spring is in the air and with it comes Easter Sunday!HAPPY EASTER TO ONE AND ALL!
Easter marks the end of forty days of lenten sacrifice.It is the best Sunday for the christians as it is a celebration of new life.Easter,the feast of the resurrection of Jesus gives mankind confident hope for the future.The bottom line is the promise it holds that all humans will be raised from death and will live an eternal life.Jesu's resurrection is seen as the vindication of all that eh saidand the ultimate sign of victory over sin and death.It is the victory of truth.In the end,Jesu's resurrection not only reiterates the Good News he proclaimed but establishes that he himself was the Good News.

Christians make elaborate preparations to celebrate Easter which is the oldest of all Christian festivals.The festival marks the transition from night to day and from death to life.It symbolises new beginnings and joy of the harvest season.
On Good Friday,Jesus Christ was executed by crucifixion.His body was removed from the cross and buried in acave near Mount Cavalry,just outside Jeruselam.On Sunday morning,the tomb was found empty neither the enemies nor the friends of Jesus could find his body.Resurrection became a reality when became a reality when Jesus was sighted in several public places at different times,with his living body for people to s ee and touch.People therefore accepted,Jesus as the true Son of God and believed in His Resurrection.

Ushered in after the forty day austere and penitential season of Lent,the festival marked with midnight church service followed by solemn Eucharistic celebrations.Pascal commemoration in many parishes is marked with candle light processions and baptism of new born children.The devotees are seen busy thronging local markets for purchasing sweets and other goods for the prayers.
Since the resurrection of Jesus about 2000 years ago,Easter continues to bring hope to humanity and even today to our broken world that is continuously threatened by vilolence,inequality,injustice,terrorism and instability.The hope of eternal life as promised byEaster exposesall theories of fear,evil,destruction and death.
Easter brings joy and areason to celebrate.Easter gives areason to live,a reason to repent and to transform.Easter gives a reason to believe in common brotherhood,common humanity and in one God.
There is no greater truth than the Resurrection of Christ which continues to inspire and enlighten.And to the one who discovers the truth,as Jesus himself would say,,''The truth will set you free''.

Our days are cramped with our own needs and ambitions.there is neither the time or nor the inclination to look beyond our selfish restraints.Who wants to see the pain and feel for the downtrodden?

Easter marks the end of the period of lent,and the fast is broken on this day.Before breaking the fast,Christians go to the church for the Holy Communion.After this,they greet each other,wishing each other,Happy Easter.The evening is set aside for get-togethers of family and friends and dinner is a large elaborate feast.The gifting of the chocolate crusted Easter Egg to children at home is a ritual that is widely followed.

There are several symbols associated with Christian Easter Sunday such as eggs,rabbits,chicks,lilies,sunrise service and new outfits.It is believed that Easter Eggs represent the beginning of life while rabbits and chicks represent the rebirth of Jesus Christ.Besides,Easter Lily[the white lily] is asymbol of the Resurrection Of Jesus Christ.The Easter Bunny has its origin in the pre Christian fertility lore.The hare and the rabbit were the most fertile animals known and they served as symbols of the new life during the spring season.The first edible Easter Bunnies were made in GERMANY DURING THE EARLY 1800Ss of pastryand sugar.''The best portion of man's life is his little,nameless unremembered acts of kindness and love''.

KAN NIRAYE UNNIKANNAN........

Wishing All Of You AnAuspicious And Prosperous Vishu kani-Ponkani!

kani kanum neram kamala nethrente..................,''kalabham tharam, bhagavanente manassum tharam...........''..Vishu is today. Vishu falls on medam first.On this day,the sun is moving to MASHA RAASHI.Any celebration arouses the terrific feeling of missing our dear ones,our hometown,the traditions and rituals in the minds of a pravasi.

The main attraction of vishu is Vishukani.

The decorated idol of KANNAN wearing gold chain alongwith kani vellarikka,konna poovu,chakka,manga,the half coconuts with diyas lit,silver coins,valkannadi,the grantham,unakkallari,ashta mangalya set and the lighted lamps...................what more can we ask than this amazing sight in the early hours of the new year?The whole forthcoming year will be wonderful and prosperous!

Now, we keep all fruits in the brass uruli, available in the market like apples,pine apple,orange and grapes.but the main attraction is KANNANUNNI.We decorate Krishnan with palakka mala or pavan mala.We never become satisfied till the last decoration is done.

The previous night amma keeps the Vishu Kani.The most memorable vishu kani was the one prepared by my little star in my tharavadu.She had taken pains to make the decorations beautiful with small kasavu mundu spread as the background .Krishna was garlanded with fresh mullapoov mala. We have taken the photographs. Early in the morning amma wakes us and bring us to the pooja room,with our eyes closed.With little water kept in the small brass kindi,we wash our eyes and see the most beautiful sight of smiling krishna in the light of ezhu thiriyitta vilakku and the fruits and silver coins.

My little star and maza want to carry the traditions on....................

In our ancestoral tharavadu,the kani was shown to the cows and the oxen in the sheds.we had two big sheds with so many cows and oxen.

We,the children were eager to light the crackers,lathiri and poothiri.i love meshappovu.i like to see it going up.In my Achan's house we used to light the malapadakkam.Thala chakram is also very exciting.It goes round and round and we used to run after lighting it.

After having a bath in tharavattu kulam we wear the new dresses.After the prayers,we were eager to get our vishukkai neetam.Then we go to Guruvayoor temple to have the darshan of Unnikannan.So many devotees sleep in the temple blindfolded to have the ponkani of Kannanunni.e believe,the forthcoming year will be auspicious and prosperous by the darshan of KANNAN.

The natural gifts are,konna poov,vellarikka,chakka,manga,coconuts and other numerous fruits.the day and night are of the same length on this day.it's the spring time.all are ready to welcome the changes in nature.it's the season to celebrate.i remember our kizhakke padam completely filled with vellarikka.the swarna vellarikkas are later tied to the kazhukkol of the roof.they remain fresh for many months.

Temple priest-Thirumeni- prepares the tasty palpayasam.it's really special.

Non keralites enjoy our meal.but Vishu is a family get together following the traditions and rituals.We invite our local guests for Onam.

A grand sadya awaits us at noon.Mampuzha kootan,mangakkari and chakka erisssery are a must. A nalu kari sadya is so delicious served on plantain leaves.

Vishu vela is popular in THANIKKUDAM DEVI TEMPLE.Kuthira kali,kala kettu and vela bring the joyous atmosphere.

I miss the temples in Kerala where we have an aal thara,ambalakulam,aana and the village cool breeze.That's a total different experience.I want to be there in my village with amma and my family.Otherwise any celebration is incomplete.I got the vishukkai neetam from Amma and I gave kaineettam to Madhav and family[younger brother].

At Sabarimala and Guruvayoor,preparations are over for vishukani.There will be too much rush of devotees.at guruvayoor,kanidarshanam is from 2.30a.m-3.30a.m while at sabarimala it's from 4a.m-7a.m.vishu vilakku is lit in pure ghee at Guruvayoor tomorrow.The gold thidambu of Kannanunniwill be placed in the mukha mandapam and the ponkani will be kept in the brass uruli.

Children eagerly wait for vishu as this is the time to collect maximum pocket money in the form of vishukkai neetam.

The spirit of life is lifted due to the celebrations and get togethers.Vishu adds colours to our attitudes,hopes and aspirations.
Tamalians,bengalis,Assamese also celebrate their new year as Chitra Kani,Ugadi and Bihu!

On this auspicious day,I extent my warm heart felt vishu aashmsakal to all of you!

A pleasant and refreshing evening to one and all..I am writing a post after ten days...Since two weeks..it was work...work and work!When I am tired of my workload,I think of the unemployed ,the less fortunate those who wish they had my job.

A pleasant goodmorning to all of you!A cool breeze is flowing from the sea.Sparrows are chirping.We are safe and comfortable in our homes.Thinking of the victims of Tsunami in Japan,my heart weeps.More than thousand and seven hundred people have lost their lives.Friends,let us pray wholeheartedly for the peace and normalcy of life in Japan at the earliest.

I hardly get time to enjoy the cool and refreshing mornings as I leave early for my work.Sitting in the balcony,sipping my hot cup of tea,I love to spend time with the blue calm waves....the beautiful floating clouds....A small star.......just a little star....smiles at me daily morning in the wee hours.I get the load of positive energy and my heart fills with happiness and cheer.I am so grateful God takes care.

It is so painful to update oneself what is happening in Japan.A massive tsunami triggered by Japan's most powerful earthquake in nearly a centuary Friday wrought devastation in northeast coastal Japan,sweeping away houses,ships and cars settong ablaze several buildings killing thousands of people.
Here this photo shows houses in flames after being hit by the tsunami at Natori city in Miyagi prefecture,northern Japan on Friday.A massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake shook Japan,unleashing a powerful tsunami thats ent ships crashing into the shore and carried cars through the streets of coastal towns.
Television images showed fires raging in several building complexes as also a major petrochemical complex in Sendai.
A wall of water several kilometres wide triggered by the earthquake,the most powerful since 1923 termor in Great Kanto area in Tokyo.

Let us pray To God to protect people and cattle from the fury of nature....Sincere prayers and caring thoughts of the victims!

It's tough and difficult...Power,train services off in Tokyo,Narita airport shuts down temporarily and phones are on blink.
A train with unknown number of passengers missing,ship with hundred people swept away...

Fun filled days of merriment began today in the state.Goa springs to life in a riot of colours,costumes and entertainment.King Momo welcomes one and all to join in the festivities and taste the carnival spirit.

It's that time once again,when a giant clown mask will poke fun at you and

riot of colour and spectacle will fill the streets in the towns.after the grand valentine's day celebrations,it's time to tap your feet to the loud music......
The Carnival of Goa is the time to indulge in feasting,drinking and merry making.During the festival ,proceedings.
The whole state of Goa takes part in this grand festival.The state comes to life due to a multi-cultural essence that is depicted in the day's d festival.During this festival,the entire state of Goa is decorated with colourful papers,ribbons and streamers.

the streets will be transformed with carnival decor and thronged by people who come out to throw water balloons and colour at each other to laugh,to sing and to enjoy.for tourists,a lot in store-the mammoth carnival ,parades,music and dances,international performances and khell-tiatrs,street magicians and even a motorcross.

it's a beautiful scene.the state's enchanting waterfront will be dressed up in carnival decor.

The carnival starts with a magnificent display of colourful floats.King Momo,who is the 'King Of Chaos'' is chosen for the activities of three days.Live bands are important part of carnival with deafening music dominating for three days.Groups of masked revellers dressed in dazzling costumes sing and dance to the tunes of renowned musicians.The celebartions are also accompanied by a rize distribution ceremony where the best floats are adequately rewarded.

There will be six categories of floats-traditional,club/institution,family,fun junk car and jokers/clowns.

Red,Black and Gold Dance-the traditional carnival dance is back with a twist at Mandovi Riveria.

there will be dance contests for school and college students,a musical show,a fishing contest in the lake a canoe race at the old cross at khariwada and afancy dress will be in store for the people of the port town city.

the village of velsao too will have its own carnival programme on sunday with konkani plays,spot singing and fancy dress contest.

hey,friends,this is happening only here...........in the paradise on earth.

everyone has a dream.have you ever dreamt of being a part of this intoxicating masti?what are you waiting for?a red carpet welcome awaits you.

Keeping with the current times,there was a float showing the ICC Cricket World Cup.However ,football is always on Goan's mind and hence there was a float of Octopus Paul with a message,'In the year 2050,India will win the World Cup'.

Good Evening!
It's a fine and pleasant evening!

I am busy with work but there is not much stress...or I don't allow stress to affect me badly.I find happiness and cheer in and around.

Exams are fast approaching and educational counselling is of great importance now.We have to encourage students and instil confidence in them.Praise works wonders.Children love to be appreciated.We must respect them and teach them to respect themselves.When they live with acceptance they start making friends and they love life.

It's not easy to handle children who don't have proper background like educated parents and good social cirle to move around.

The other day I had a missed call.When I called the number,my little client Vikhyat picked up.His father was out of station and the balance was only for one rupee.He was free to use mobile in his father's absence.Whenever I leave for hometown he keeps me updated about the happenings.It's a bond of love and trust.I know he loves me a lot,but I should talk about cricket,world cup and cricketers!And the is one last game I know to talk about!:)
I do take newspapers for my little clients and they are so excited to see the sports page.They start telling me stories of their favourite players.
Vikhyat loves showing me the monkeys jumping from the treetops to the tiled roof.Now the topic starts,how fast they run and all other related details.It's fun watching the monkeys jumping up and down..
Latest fim songs are always on his lips and I must say,he sings so well.I join him and encourage him.

The other day I was trying to teach something important and gave him a topic to write down.That is the last thing he would do!In between he came to me and whispered.......''you look so nice when you leave your hair!''I could not help smiling and replied...''Tell your Mom to leave her hair''.

EverydayI am thinking on new ways to make him understand how important education is!:)

The other day I had a mail.It was from my little friend,Mohit who had left station due to his dad's transfer.He wants to convey,he is missing a lot... A reply assuring my love and care would have made him happy.

Now I can never forget a cute little face of a five year old boy.I used to meet him once a week and used to ask his name.I do forget names and numbers and I always had to ask him again and again.He must have been fed up.Next time when I asked his name,he told,''What is the use of telling you, my name?Next week you will ask again''.:)I was so embarassed.....We should never underestimate these cute little friends.
Ankit spent his pocket money and bought me a beautiful black bracelt...I was so touched by his kind and loving gesture....
I was so upset when little Keiv brought the newspaper to show his beloved Dad's photograph in obituary column....the boy was lost and sad...I had to search for words to comfort him.

Girls always talk about their dolls and new dress or the new dance number they have learnt...But they are willing to learn..They pay attention...
Here are some of the ways and methods I adopt.....

I give tunes to small devotioanl songs and make them pray....
Make them undesratnd prayers do wonders in life....
To be grateful to God for all blessings!

Direct small skits for them....

And help them discover themselves....
Organise competitions in different events

Thus help them to explore and discover..

Show movies like Baby's Day Out

And make them laugh and be happy...
To have role models and to dream high..
To behave properly and be the pride of their parents...
To love and respect elders and seek their blessings...

Giving chances to address a larger group

And make them remove stage fear and instil confidence!

Giving children's magazines to read

And to widen the horizon of imagination...

Taking them for field trips and nature walks...

Thus helping them to love nature......

Narrating stories with voice modulation and actions

Reciting catchy poems and songs...

Celebrating festivals and important days,

Thus helping to be proud of our culture...

Asking their valuable suggestions

In organising programmes....

Sharing lunch and teaching to be kind.....

I am so grateful to these wonderful friends

They make my moments happy and memorable...

And now I am going to learn cricket...
To talk about the sixers and wickets!:)

Then watch the excitement in the twinkling eyes!

My cute little friends make me smile

And bring new hopes and dreams!

They teach me new things everyday!

I am so happy in their company!

Kids are bundle of fun,knowledge and talents

They must be moulded with love and care!

Friends,love and express your love to kids...
